T-Nuts

How many t-nuts do I need?

There is no right or wrong answer to the number of T-Nuts to add per sheet of plywood. However a quick answer would be 72. If you use an 8 inch grid as shown in the diagram below, each piece of plywood will need 72. If you are not planning on using screw-on foot holds you might consider more T-Nuts for your bolt-on foot holds. You don’t have to use a grid and are free to place them randomly wherever you want. Just make sure not to add them where the studs will be. The only mistake you can make is not adding enough and wishing you had more after the wall is already built and the plywood is already screwed on. They are not expensive and nothing is more fun than climbing on a wall full of holds so you will need to plan for the future when adding T-Nuts.

If you use an 8 inch grid like the example below, make sure you start the grid 4 inches from the sides so you miss the studs. Most studs are placed 16 or 24 inches on center.

What are T-Nuts?

T-Nuts are a very important part of climbing walls of any kind. The main use is for attaching the holds to the wall. The benefit of a T-Nut over a regular nut is the fact that it makes attaching and moving holds very easy and less time cosuming. The other reason is because sometimes it's difficult to get to the back of the climbing wall to hold a nut while it's tightened. The idea of the T-Nut is to install as many as you can so that you can easily move or add new holds in the future.

The standard T-Nut size is an ID of 3/8" for the 3/8" bolts and an OD of 7/16". This means you will want to use a 7/16" drill bit for drilling the holes.
